Heath Ledger outdid himself while preparing for the portrayal of the iconic role of The Joker in The Dark Knight by locking himself in a hotel room for more than an entire month!
If you’re a fan of DC and you’re a fan of Heath Ledger, then you can’t picture anybody else playing the role of The Joker. But do you know that Heath went to extreme lengths just to make sure he could bring life into the crazy, sarcastic, ironic and altogether mad Joker?
According to official reports, Ledger was cast at the sole beginning of the production, so he had tons of time to get ready for the role of The Joker. The actor had to become well acquainted with the character, had to get under his skin and become truly mad so that he could do his brilliant performance behind the cameras. So, what did he do? Ledger locked himself in a hotel room for over a month (for 6 weeks, if we have to be exact) and he focused only on working on the character. He kept what later became known as the Joker journal – a diary filled with thoughts, scribbles, pictures, schemes, character studies, and so on. He used vibrant colors, he used irony, analysis and tons of other techniques, which helped him become one with The Joker.
Evidently, Ledger was so brilliant at portraying The Joker that the success The Dark Knight had wasn’t only due to the fact that it was an outstanding post-mortem performance of the late actor. The movie grossed over $1 billion in box office and became an iconic screening amongst the tons of other movies about DC’s superhero Batman.
