Marilyn Monroe is famous for many things – her alleged affair with John F. Kennedy, her iconic movies and musicals, and the fact that she set a standard for female beauty for generations to come. Here’s a little less known fact about her – she was the very first woman to be featured on the cover of Playboy Magazine.
Launched in the distant 1953 by the infamous Hugh Hefner Playboy quickly became the most popular men’s magazine of all times. Monroe was 27 years old when she graced the cover of the magazine’s very first issue. The photo used on the cover was taken from a beauty pageant parade from the previous year and it showed Monroe waving her hand up in the air while dressed in a skimpy dress. The cover advertised the fact that buyers would see Marilyn nude inside and that it was the very first magazine to feature colorful such colorful images. The nude picture of the 27 year old actress was actually a photo of her taken back in 1949 for a series of naked pictures. The fact that the controversial magazine chose Monroe to be their very first cover girl acclaimed her as a total bombshell and one of the most attractive Hollywood women.
Regardless of the fact that she was the most wanted and advertised actress of her time and one of the top assets of 20th Century Fox, Monroe’s contract actually limited her to salaries lower than the ones of other actors and actresses of her rang and she wasn’t even allowed to choose the projects she wanted to work on! Regardless of this and the fact that she played only dumb and pompous characters, she still remains one of the most iconic persons in the movie industry.
