Mai Thanh Sang, a 23 year old worker in a Vietnamese fish factory, and three of his colleagues had a near-death accident. The men were working in the -22 degrees C storage freezer in the factory located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, when some of the shelves collapsed over them.
Mr. Sang’s colleagues were able to escape, but he was trapped after the ice. The rescue parties had to spend 103 hours while cleaning their way in order to save the man. Sang was frustrated and at the brink of death, but he thought about his wife and their little baby and that thought kept his spirits high. The man licked ice and drank an unpleasantly looking and tasting liquid from one of the bags containing the raw fish. The ice and the liquid combined with the furry clothing he was wearing saved his life.
He spent a total of four days in the freezer. He was hospitalized with the worst possible case of frostbite the medics at the local hospital had ever seen, but he’s recovering from the horrific accident.
